WIP: Sandman does Asia

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Last week I picked up two issues of Sandman: The Dream Hunters comic. I am probably the last person on earth to find out about this awesome collaboration between Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell, so it was a very cool surprise! The books combine my three loves: Sandman, Russell’s artwork and Japan. :D

I was totally inspired, and having realized that I have never drawn Sandman I started this piece.

It is not related to the story in Dream Hunters, just a little something I wanted to see. And it turned into Daniel because I guess I really like the white Sandman. ^_^ It works out great since his costume is already of Asian motif!

Another work in progress I want to share with you cousins is a little pinup of Poison Ivy, in a semi-art nouveau style.

Wanna know a secret? ^_^ Pretty much the only reason for this piece is that I want to paint her hair! Can’t wait to get in there and try different shades of red. Mmmm, do I love me some red hair. That’ll be fun.

kabuki scarab by Olga Ulanova

Kabuki: Scarab, 6″×4.5″ gray ink and watercolors

I found this pencil drawing from about two months ago, and decided to practice with my brand new Daniel Smith watercolors. ^_^

Alas, the drawing was done on bristol board, and as I learned recently bristol doesn’t support watercolors that well. The result came out interesting, I suppose, but I’ll stick to other paper in the future.

The thing that bugs me most is the light glare on her left breast. I just don’t think my dubious light source(s) would make an effect like that. But it was fun to play with the paint! Wish I had more pre-drawn images around, so I could just sit down and color when the mood strikes me. :D

Scarab, of course, is a character from David Mack’s superb title Kabuki.

X-Men Origins Xcitement prompts chibi art!

Cozins, I cannot wait for X-Men Origins! Saw the preview last night and I am just beside myself. XD I am so excited to have Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, in all his talented glory. Honestly, nobody can even touch that.

But what really made me jump in my seat was this guy:

I am just psyched to finally see Gambit onscreen, cozins! He was my very first imaginary boyfriend when I discovered comic books. ^__^ The actor is awfully good looking in a model kind of way, but since Rogue is not involved hopefully he won’t have to do a lot of acting. XD (I’m only mean ’cause I’m emotionally vested…) May 1st cannot come soon enough!
